For those who want children

Why do people want to have a child?
To continue their parentage?
To keep going their special genes?
Because of social pressure or for the sake of others?
To increase the number of family members?
To leave own inheritance to the child?
To have a helper?
A voice in the house, so they won’t be alone?
A successful child who lives up to their parents’ expectations?

But what if that doesn’t happen?
If it is fated a childless life,
If the child doesn’t live up to family’s expectations or fit into a predetermined mold,
If the child isn’t like in dreams,
Can we still keep wanting one?

Research– Household data (with or without children)

According to OECD data on European countries, the number of households consisting of couples is an average of 47.97% of the total number of households. Of these couples, almost half have children (an average of 22.09% of all households), while the other half are childless (an average of 25.88% of all households) in 2021.¹

And the number of children per woman is trending downward worldwide. While the average fertility rate per woman was approximately 2.84 children in 1970, this rate declined to an average of 1.40 in 2024.²

Perspective: Up (animated movie)

The opening scene of this movie is generally a wordless summary: meeting, friendship, marriage, and what follows. The couple desire for a baby, which goes unfulfilled, and continue their marriage as a couple. The story begins after passing of the years, growing old, and death of one of the spouses.
